There are 2 kinds of sentence, they are active and passive. Active voice is a kind of sentence whose subject is the doer of the verb’s action, while passive voice is a kind of sentence whose subject is the receiver of the verb’s action.
The structure of active voice is S + P (Verb / modal aux) + O
For example:
- I read a book
- I can play basketball
The structure of passive voice:
- O + to be + V3 + by + S (if the predicate is a verb)
- O + modal aux + to be + V3 + by + S (if the predicate is a modal)
(Actually, the structure will be written as S + to be + V3 + by + O or S + modal aux + to be + V3 + by + O but I write it in this version so you can see the difference between active and passive voice)
For example:
- A book is read by me
- Basketball can be played by me
Please note these important things:
- The predicate of active voice MUST BE a verb or modal auxiliary.
- The verb MUST BE a transitive verb. Transitive verb is a verb which needs an object
- Mostly, an active voice can be changed into a passive voice.
- Object in active voice will be the subject in passive voice. The object MUST BE a direct object.
- Subject in active voice will be the object in passive voice and it will be placed after by
- by + O in passive voice can be erased. For example, a book is read.
